A hot start would be the best scenario
for the Pirates and Jack Wilson. Jack can be
a very formidable role player on a contender. I'd expect him to be gone by the time the trade deadline starts to kick in gear -- if not well before. I'd love to see him get to play meaningful baseball in his career.
Manny Pacquiao is named The Queensberry Rules' top
pound-for-pound boxer and three other posts from Most Valuable
Network are highlighted in Tuesday's edition of the best of MVN.
This much is certain: The Pirates will be
faced with a decision soon. Adam LaRoche is set
to reach free agency after the 2009 season. The club will need to trade him, extend him or lose him to free agency by this time next year.
OUT: Adam LaRoche (traded to LAA), Nate McLouth
(traded to ATL), $50 million or so in 2009.
IN: Adam Dunn, Mike Trumbo, Ryan Westmoreland, Cole Rohrbough, three risk-reward low-level prospects, two extra 2010 draft picks.
It would seem as if an American League
team which believes Ryan Doumit's 2007-2008 performances are repeatable
and which plans to contend in 2009-2010 could benefit from his catching 100 or so games and playing first base or serving as a designated hitter in 30-40 more.
Five reasons for trading Jack Wilson from the
Pirates to the Dodgers, Orioles or Tigers, and five
reasons to keep the likable shortstop in Pittsburgh black and gold.
As the Rule 5 draft approaches, expect the
Pittsburgh Pirates to clear space on the 40-man roster
with the goal of finding another diamond in the rough. Kei Igawa, Eduardo Morlan, Brad Kilby, William Rhymes and Jordan Brown are discussed as potential candidates.

Anthony Castrovince, the Cleveland Indians’ beat writer on
MLB.com, reports Sunday afternoon that anonymous sources have confirmed
that a trade has been consummated between the Indians and Milwaukee Brewers. C.C. Sabathia will be sent to Milwaukee in exchange for three prospects. Matt LaPorta, the Brewers No. 1 draft pick in 2006, is believed to be part of the package.
After earning national recognition last year for having
the most accurate mock draft, Sam Panayotovich had his
work cut out for him this summer. He tries his best to ignore all the ridiculous speculation and stay focused on penning in players where he believes they will best fit. Without further ado, here is the third version of his 2008 NBA Draft mock...
Just when it appeared that the Blazers were
sellers in the draft pick trade market, they made
a move yesterday to purchase the 27th pick from the New Orleans Hornets for $3 million in cash. Blazers GM Kevin Pritchard does it again!
It doesn’t matter what position you play when
you’re in the post, as long as you man
up. So, calling all centers, power forwards and even some small forwards as the case may be. Who’s got a lock on the block? Here’s Jon Burkett's list of the top post players in this draft…
Serge Ibaka is a raw forward from the
Congo who possesses the most upside out of all
the international prospects in the draft. Jon Burkett likes him so much, he wouldn’t mind if his Sixers selected him at 16.
Impressively, Justin Smoak has not gotten frustrated with
being pitched around. Instead has posted a .364 BA
with 11doubles and 13 HR. Furthermore, has has walked 34 times and K’d 21. He is on pace to have more walks than strikeouts in his college career.
To be drafted as a 1B out of
high school, there has to be no doubt you
can hit - and to me, Eric Hosmer has not hit well enough in showcases (Aflac and Team USA) to justify being ranked ahead of other 1B like Smoak, Alonso, and Wallace. Furthermore, his high school competition has not been outstanding.

Jack Wilson is the Pirates' shortstop -- for now
