The injured reserve scam by the Patriots is
part of a pattern of ethical lapses.
The O.J. Mayo saga has dominated headlines this
week and by extension brought the NBA's age limit
under attack. One argument made by my colleague Gregg Doyel is that forcing elite prospects into college for a one-year pit stop invites problems regarding agents prematurely investing in players. And he's correct. It's a recipe for probation
A casual visit to the BCS website--on the
day of college football's latest playoff proposal getting the
ixnay in spring meetings in Florida--reveals a sidebar full of propaganda so cherry-picked it would probably make Kim Jong-Il blush in comparison. This is not an exaggeration.
Remember that little discussion we just had regarding
Joe Girardi’s temperament and how his relationship with the
guys covering the team will impact his ability to do his job? Well, let’s just say Peter Abraham of the Journal News is a little pissed off at Girardi right now.
Martin Brodeur will be vying for his fourth
career Vezina Trophy, when the National Hockey League dishes
out its annual awards in June.
Critics of the trade have never confronted the
salient question, which is this: In cutting ties with
an aging free agent catcher in favor of a young Top 20 starter entering his prime, isn’t it just possible that Paul DePodesta had enough foresight to recognize a 2008 spreadsheet opportunity when he saw it in 2004? Isn’t it foolish to pass judgment on a long-term move in the short-term?
Illinois' Rashard Mendehall may turn out to be
an outstanding NFL running back, but if he does,
he'll be bucking a lot of history. Mendenhall is considered one of the top running backs in this year's draft, and he's pegged by some to be a mid to late first-rounder. But he'll have to overcome a somewhat accurate stigma that Big 10 backs are more trouble than they are worth.
Fans and scientists alike have described Joe DiMaggio
’s 56 game hitting streak as well nigh impossible.
The writers decided to calculate how unlikely it really was.

Erin Andrews, TEL 2000, Sideline Reporter for ESPN
and the College's 2007 UF Outstanding Young Alumni honoree,
will speak to students on Thursday, March 20, 2008 at 6:15 p.m. EDT in the Gannett Auditorium (1064 Weimer Hall). Now I know what you're saying...."But AA I don't live in Gainesville, Florida you asshat" which is understandable. But what if I told you there is a live webcast! ...
Truthfully, though, I can't say that interleague play
is too exciting, anymore...The thing is that it doesn't
have to be this way. There are plenty of possible matchups out there that would give a little boost of something to one of Bud Selig's babies. No, they're currently not annual rivalries, but for one reason or another, they need to be.
Tennessee Titans center Kevin Mawae was elected president
of the NFL Players Association today, replacing Troy Vincent,
whose term recently ended and who is no longer an active player. Mawae, who was voted as president at the conclusion of a four-day meeting in Hawaii, wasted no time in pointing out that serious issues face the union, [...]
"And when the national anthem was finished and
the players headed for their dugouts, it was time
to play a game that was less about baseball than it was about healing." How fitting, then, that a game about healing involved making Virginia Tech look pathetic at baseball two days after the school narrowly missed out on an NCAA tourney bid.
Last night, while preparing for today's tournament lunacy,
our phone rang. We didn't have time to answer
it, so 20 minutes later, we checked our messages. It was Bob Costas. He wanted to discuss, on record, his comments from last week. We called him back and talked for about 20 minutes. Samplings of the interview follow.
Anyone who's played fantasy baseball has had the
sneaking suspicion that putting together a championship fantasy team
requires strikingly similar components as putting together a team in real life...I decided to imagine that the MLB was a sort of grand-scale fantasy league. I ranked each real life major league team by the standard 5x5 rotisserie format based on its team stats. Here's the results.
Some people really like St. Joe's, apparently
We here at the MLB FanHouse have decided
to take a more vigilant stance on idiotic things
written by the media about baseball this year. We're not on an FJM-style seek-and-destroy mission, but we do want to point out things that are just painfully stupid and why they are that way. So thank you, Paul Daughterty of the Cincinnati Enquirer, for giving me something to do this afternoon.
Would he consider point guard?
Ever wondered which of the preseason fantasy football
rankings was the most accurate?
Trading Robertson and Vilma would continue an alarming
trend. The Jets treat their former first-round picks like
disposable contact lenses: Use them for a while and throw ‘em out. Since 1998, five former No. 1s have been sent packing. That is not how you build a championship team. Your No. 1 picks should be the backbone of the roster.
