Toronto Blue Jays starter Dustin McGowan exited Tuesday's
contest with the Orioles with a sore shoulder after
four innings and today was placed on the 15-day disabled list. McGowan underwent an MRI today but no test results were made available. With the All-Star break approaching, the move was made as a precaution.
Slightly delayed with this weeks blogger poll, but
nonetheless, the Awards for the American League as of
the thirteenth week are up at Roto Junkie. Things are beginning to get very tight in the American League according to the voters. Check out how I voted for week eleven...
...When the Los Angeles Dodgers return from the
All-Star break they will have a new hitting coach.
It's no surprise that it will be Don Mattingly who turned the position down at the start of the season to devote time to family as he was in the middle of a divorce. But he has since told the Dodgers he's ready to join in a full time capacity. He will be replacing Mike Easler.
The Detroit Free Press is reporting that the
Detroit Tigers have signed 1st round pick Ryan Perry.
The signing bonus is said to be $1.48 million. Perry said that the Tigers would like him “to be in the big leagues … once the rosters are expanded” on Sept. 1, and that he will start the season in Class A Lakeland this week.
- Miguel Cabrera went 4-for-4 with 2 home
runs and 3 RBI, and Marcus Thames added a
double, a homer, and 3 RBI to give Justin Verlander and the Tigers plenty of offensive support to go on and beat the Indians, 9-2. - Kevin Youkilis singled, doubled, tripled, and scored 2 runs, and Manny Ramirez led a 4-run 8th inning comeback with a 2-run game tying blast as the Red Sox stunned the Twins, 6-5.
...Hiroki Kuroda took a perfect game into the
8th inning before finishing with a complete game one-hitter,
and Nomar Garciaparra hit a 2-run home run as the Dodgers shut out the Braves, 2-0...Ricky Nolasco gave up one run over 8 innings, and Jorge Cantu belted a 2-run homer to lead the Marlins to a 3-1 win over the Padres. Alfredo Amezaga went 3-for-4 as well for Florida.
Could Hiroki Kuroda of the Los Angeles Dodgers
pitch a perfect game? The Japanese import was just
six outs away from the first Perfect Game in the Majors since Randy Johnson did it against the Braves on May 18, 2004...UPDATE: Through seven, Kuroda threw just 65 pitches with 45 of them strikes and gave up no hits and no walks. Atlanta's Mark Teixeira led off the eighth inning with a double...
With Sabathia going to Milwaukee, the Cubs are
looking towards Rich Harden of the Oakland Athletics. This
according to Chris De Luca of the Chicago Sun times. ...The Dodgers are in the market for a Shortstop due to Rafael Furcal being injury prone this year - and his return from the DL is hazy. The rumor is that they're pursuing SS Jack Wilson of the Pittsburgh Pirates
By Alex Eisenberg...This article begins what will be
an on-going series that will look at how the
all-time great players in Major League Baseball history became the players they were in terms of the mechanics they used. We start with a couple of the best hitters in major league history in Reggie Jackson and Paul Molitor.
Now that the C.C. Sabathia trade is official,
teams that were squashed in the bidding by the
Milwaukee Brewers' Minor League depth may feel like they still have to make a big move. Erik Bedard, a left-hander that the Seattle Mariners paid a hefty price for in the off-season, is heavily rumored to be available...
- Jerry Hairston Jr. had 2 hits and
2 RBI, and Adam Dunn blasted a 3-run home
run as the Reds held off the Nationals, 6-5. Edinson Volquez picked up his 11th win of the year for Cincinnati. - Oliver Perez tossed 7 scoreless innings, Carlos Beltran had 3 hits, a home run, 2 RBI, and 2 stolen bases, and Fernando Tatis redeemed Billy Wagner with a 2-run homer in the 12th
The Milwaukee Brewers and Executive Vice President and
General Manager Doug Melvin have just announced they will
host a press conference today at Miller Park in the Media Interview Room at 11 a.m. CT to announce a baseball related transaction. Anyone want to guess what that will be :) I hope to talk to Matt LaPorta some time today.
"We're excited and ready to go," said newly
selected All-Star Ian Kinsler after a hard fought 11-10
win over the Baltimore Orioles. Kinsler, Josh Hamilton and Milton Bradley will all make their first appearance in a Major League All-Star game joining teammate Michael Young who is headed to his fifth consecutive All-Star game. All four men were humble and honored...
By Craig Brown...If you didn’t know it before
this week, a three game sweep of the Boston
Red Sox should have made you sit up and take notice. This is a team that is built for October baseball. Obviously, it didn’t happen overnight. Born from the ashes of an expansion draft in 1998, the Rays have been the doormat of the AL for just over a decade.
By Alex Eisenberg...I was recently asked about Micha
Owings, specifically why he doesn’t throw for a higher
velocity. One of the first things I noticed was an inefficiency in his mechanics. I’ve said before that a pitcher (or hitter for that matter) can have all the necessary components of a powerful swing or all the necessary components to produce velocity...
By Rob McQuown...Widely regarded as the Nationals best
hitter, Ryan Zimmerman batted third every game for the
Nationals in 2007. Likewise, all of Albert Pujols' games started came in the coveted 3-spot in the Cardinals lineup. Yet, do these batting order decisions make sense statistically?
By Paul Bugala...Baseball Digest Daily’s minor league correspondent
Paul Bugala recently sat down with Chris Tillman, now
a Baltimore Orioles prospect, to discuss his bounce back from a challenging year in the California League, the adjustments he’s made to his game, and why his age is a running joke in the Bowie Baysox clubhouse.
By Craig Brown...After clearing up the confusion that
voters may have had about the AL All-Star balloting,
it’s time to turn our attention to the Senior Circuit. Judging from my inbox last week, some thought I was taking the All-Star Game and the process for selecting the starters a little too seriously. Believe me, that couldn’t have been farther from the truth.
By Tom Ferda...It's the bottom of the 6th
inning with two outs and a man on base
for the Arizona Diamondbacks who trail the visiting Houston Astros 7-5. Diamondback's Manager Bob Melvin assesses the situation and decides to call on a right-handed pinch hitter.
By Rob McQuown...Bill James recently posted a fun
and funny piece called The Ten Commandments of Sabermetrics
on his online site. Rob Neyer's ESPN column referenced it, originally from Bill James Online (billjamesonline.net). “Commandment 10” is, “Thou shall not pass freely thy opponent's number eight hitter...
