Amidst all the bad news, there's good news
for a few drivers who have, or are about
to change teams.
Nobody contributed more color to NASCAR than Dale
Earnhardt- providing the sport some of its top rivalries.
Today- we look back and examine some of Dale's more famous dust-ups.
Inspired by the move "Dale", I explore the
legend's legacy and dissect his incredible popularity, which lives
on some 7 years beyond his passing.
Is he Opie Taylor or Eddie Haskell? The
Lone Ranger or Black Bart? Makes me think of
the Bruce Springsteen tune "Two Faces." A closer look at Cousin Carl reveals a color, persistence and a fearless approach to handling the car- all the ingredients that factored into a 2007 Busch Series title.
What if songs were NASCAR awards? The thought
took me to some interesting places.
Being a family guy, I am keenly aware
of the power of advertising. NASCAR sponsorships are no
exception. My wife shares a funny story about a trip to the store that reveals "We've Got It"....pretty bad.
A 3rd generation NASCAR driver and son of
one its greatest stars, was there any doubt that
Dale Earnhardt Jr. would drive a race car? No question he loves what he does, but one wonders if he wouldn;t rather live without all the trappings that come with it.
Who's number one? Petty? Earnhardt? Maybe Gordon? There
are plenty of first ballot hall of fame possibilities,
but in my humble opinion, this heads the class.
Humor is the best medicine for curing the
"Winter Time Blues" otherwise known as the NASCAR off-season.
We check in with the lovely and talented Miss Mustang Jackie- who has a confession to make.....
A sure sign of struggling times was evident
in the parting of company between the legendary Petty
Enterprises organization and 2000 Cup chmpion Bobby Labonte. What will become of Texas Terry's younger brother? we make the case there's still a place in NASCAR for the one-time Joe Gibbs standout.
There's seems to be a changing of the
guard afoot in NASCAR as the likes of Gordon
and Kenseth get moved over by the likes of Edwards and Busch. Here's my list of drivers who could make headlines in 2009....
Admit it, whether you love him or hate
him- you know NASCAR needs a villain, a successful
villain like Kyle Busch to drive fan interest. With 21 wins over 3 series in 2008, he ain't going away. Admit it, deep down inside you love the "devil may care" attitude.
As man and machinery have intersected at great
speeds, a number of spectacular collisions have resulted. It
may be a sensitive subject for some, but NASCAR racing has produced some truly "shocking and awing" crashes that drivers have miraculously walked away from.
I'm not much for watching awards shows, but
Dale Jr's acceptance speech for his 6th straight "Most
Popular Driver" award reveals he may on to what's been missing in his pursuit on the "Road To Glory."
Maybe its some bad combination of caffeine and
sugar in my system, but the report I found
online by Jay Busbee by way of John Newsom got my blood boiling. Somebody needs to explain to me why this report of a bouncer at Dalr Jr's Whiskey River for dealing coke is a sports story.
If not for NASCAR, Kurt Busch might be
dispensing your blood pressure medicine. No doubt he's raised
some heart rates with his hard-charging style and competitive nature. Some march to the beat of a different drum. Kurt Busch seems more in step with a tuba.
Having toiled over a few microphones, I can
appreciate all the elements that make a good sportscast.
This analysis offers a comprehensive look at the hosts, announcers and pit reporters we invite into our living rooms 36 weeks a year.
As the season winds down questions about veteran
winless streaks, the effects of economic hard times, and
the fortunes of Jimmie Johnson in his historic quest for a 3rd straight NASCAR Cup. As he makes headlines on the track, financial frustrations make headlines off of it.
The middle third of the season provided plenty
of action- whether it was the Junior- Kyle Busch
incident at Atlanta, Kasey Kahne mid-season run or the announced move to ownership by Tony Stewart at Stewart- Haas Racing. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
From Daytona to Dale Jr. we at look
at some the headlines that Made NASCAR news in
the early stages of the 2008 season- whether it was Ryan Newman's breaking of a winless streak at Daytona or Kyle Busch's first win for Toyota at Atlanta.
