Tonight in the Dodgers-Phillies game, Andre Ethier was part of an interesting occurence. NOBODY on the field, in the bleachers, or even broadcasters on ESPN was aware until after the inning was over that Andre Ethier had taken five balls to get his walk.
Phillies pitcher Joe Blanton had Ethier full at 3-2 after two foul balls, and threw the fourth ball to Ethier. After the pitch, Blanton asked for the count, which home umpire Jerry Layne told him was 3-2. Blanton proceeded to throw one more ball, being the fifth, to walk him.
MLB.COM Gameday application has his at bat as a four-ball at bat—however, ESPN K-Zone replay distinctly shows that it was a five-ball at bat.
Just goes to show you how much the players pay attention to the game with the pay they make, eh?
