Bondy's Wimbledon Diary: London doesn't care to keep tabs on A-Rod

The A-Rod/Madonna thing is not as big a deal as you’d think over here in the London tabloids, mostly because readers just don’t know the name Alex Rodriguez. They have to be told, over and again, that he is “a baseball star playing in New York.” If you take out the A-Rod factor, then it’s just another Madonna mess. If only it were Michael Jackson, or Wayne Rooney. England has gone over the top, however, for 14-year-old Wimbledon junior champion Laura Robson, hoping she eventually will become its first women’s titlist since Virginia Wade. This is sort of pathetic because Robson may never win anything important, and because she’s an Aussie import who just got her British passport last year. But she’s on the front page of every newspaper today, and nobody seems very interested in Venus Williams. Reminds me of how we’re always trying to import marathoners and soccer players.
