Even though the Braves are in a shambles, it’s always great to see the Mets sweep them. Especially considering the Mets had lost 7 of 9 to Atlanta this year coming into this series, including that four-game sweep in May that obliterated any momentum from the two-game sweep at Yankee Stadium. But in the Jerry Manuel era, there is such a thing as momentum.
And the momentum is being fueled by the confidence and excitement of the players. Earlier in the season, when the Mets would have one of their rare walkoff wins, the celebrations sometimes seemed to stem from the unexpected nature of the win, from things like a 12th-inning double by Fernando Tatis shortly after he was called up.
Last night was not a home run, it did not go into extra innings, and the way the Mets - and Braves - have been going, a win was much more expected, especially considering Bobby Cox’s bizarre move of walking Carlos Beltran to face Carlos Delgado, who was 4 for 4 with 2 RBI.
