The Yankees lost a big piece of their bullpen puzzle today, as Brian Bruney’s foot injury will likely require surgery, taking the reliever out of the mix for most - if not all - of the remainder of the regular season.
Bruney visited a specialist in New York on Friday, where he was diagnosed with an injury to the Lisfranc joint in his right foot - the same injury that has hampered Giants defensive ends Michael Strahan and Justin Tuck in recent years.
The doctor’s recommendation was surgery, though manager Joe Girardi said Bruney had not yet made the final decision on whether to have the surgery.
Bruney has been one of the more consistent pitchers in the Yankees’ bullpen this season, going 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA in 12 games. In 11 1/3 innings, Bruney has allowed two runs on seven hits and six walks, striking out 12.
The Yankees recalled righthander Jonathan Albaladejo from Triple-A Scranton to replace Bruney on the roster. With Kyle Farnsworth nursing a tender elbow and Ross Ohlendorf ...
