Cincinnati Reds Are Shopping for a Shortstop

 
According to General Manager Walt Jocketty, Khalil Greene is not on the Reds' radar. However, responding to reports out of San Diego that the Reds were interested in trading with the Padres for Greene, Jocketty confirmed that the team was searching for less-expensive options at shortstop. According to Jocketty, famed for being proactive at the General Managers Meetings in the offseason, he informed teams that he was interested in some insurance if Alex Gonzalez were unable to play. Jocketty cited Jeff Keppinger and Paul Janish as viable shortstop options and allowed for the possibility of not acquiring additional support at that position. Assuming the Reds are looking for inexpensive help at short, they will likely need to look elsewhere than the free-agent pool. The Reds are attempting to resign Jerry Hairston, Jr. who could play the position. Beyond that, the pool thins, the competition for top free agents increases, and available players come at a premium.
