An NBA coach recently told me that the best jobs in basketball are general manager and director of player personnel.
"Those guys rarely get fired,” the coach said. “They don’t want coaches. They want caretakers. They want the guy on the bench to coddle their precious first-round picks.”
I don’t know if fired Jets head coach Eric Mangini is any good but he did make the playoffs three years ago and the Jets were 8-3 this year. But since you can’t blame Mangini for acquiring Brett Favre you have to say that he doesn’t show enough emotion on the sidelines.
Think about the NBA coaches fired this season. Would Sam Mitchell be a better coach if Toronto had drafted Brandon Roy instead of Andrea Bargnani? Was it Randy Wittman who traded Kevin Garnett or was it Kevin McHale? Can anyone win with Oklahoma City’s roster?
That’s why Isiah Thomas had that miserable look on his face the day that Garden Chairman James Dolan installed him as head coach ...
