Laveranues Coles’ deal is done. Basically, the Jets guaranteed the last two years of his current deal, a total of $11 million, according to ESPN. The Jets made that very proposal more than a month ago. At the time, Coles balked, figuring the “guarantee” was no great shake because he was going to get the money anyway.
In the end, Coles gave in. But the Jets gave in, too, taking the unusual step of guaranteeing money - somewhat of a risk because of Coles’ age (30) and recent history of concussions.
Still digging to find out the exact contract, but it appears that no additional years were added. A newspaper report this morning said Coles got “two or three years” added to his deal, but that seemingly is inaccurate.
UPDATE: It’s official: The Jets guaranteed the final two years remaining on Coles’ contract, an NFL source confirmed.
Coles wanted more, but the Jets didn’t have to do anything. So it’s a compromise, with a small victory ...
