The Jets didn’t get Matt Ryan. Or Joe Flacco. Or Brian Brohm. Or Chad Henne.
But, make way for Tennessee QB Erik Ainge, who was selected in the fifth round (No. 162 overall). He has great size (6-5, 225) and terrific genes. As you probably know, he’s the nephew of former NBA player Danny Ainge.
Ainge passed for 3,522 yards, 31 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in the tough SEC. He was the South MVP in the Senior Bowl. Okay, now for the conerns, and there are plenty: He has questionable physical and mental toughness. Pro Football Weekly, in his player evaluations, says Ainge “does not like to be hit or play through injury.”
Unfortunately for Ainge, he’s had a lot of injuries.
He’s got the right size, and his arm has some power, so it was worth a shot in the fifth round. But if he’s mentally soft, he won’t survive on the Jets.
