What can be so special about a middle reliever who's made only 26 appearances in 2008?
A couple nights ago, while his team was visiting Toronto, Oakland A's pitcher Brad "Ziggy" Ziegler came in to pitch the seventh and eighth innings. He did exactly what he had done the previous 32 innings he has pitched this year: not allow a run.
He has yet to allow a run this year, be it earned or unearned. His ERA sits at 0.00 in 26 game appearances spanning 34 innings. He's allowed 19 hits, struck out 15, and walked nine.
Not impressed?
Wait. What makes this story really remarkable is the fact that Ziegler was just called up from the minors a little over two months ago. He faced his first major-league batter in Texas on May 31. Since then, he's been hanging up zeros on the board whenever he pitches.
Thirty-four consecutive scoreless innings pitched breaks down to almost four complete-game shutouts in a row. To start a season in this manner is amazing to say the least. To start your major league career ...
