Nothing like a 34-minute team meeting to ruin a perfectly good night.
Okay, so it wasn’t exactly a good night for the Yankees before the meeting, but after Joe Girardi ripped into his team for their blasé, impassionate play, the night had surely taken a turn for the worse.
Nobody in the clubhouse would say exactly what the manager’s message was, but reading between the lines, it was clear that he let them know that the type of baseball they’ve been playing for much of the year - the past week, especially - would not be tolerated.
As usual, Johnny Damon was one of the few players who stood by his locker and answered any and all questions thrown in his direction. Damon stressed how lucky he and his teammates are to be able to wear the Yankees uniform, saying that they need to show the pride and passion that has been missing for much of the season or things could take a dramatic turn in the next four weeks.
