Growing concern over Maine

 
Jerry Manuel acknowledged growing concern this morning over John Maine, who was roughed up in Saturday’s 8-3 loss to the Astros. Maine, who’s been avoiding throwing between starts and dealing with decreased velocity because of bone spurs behind his right shoulder, is tentatively still slated to pitch Friday in Florida, Manuel said. But that will depend on how Maine feels and looks during some side work during this week. Otherwise, Manuel wouldn’t dismiss the possibility of “a complete shutdown” and a need to replace Maine in the rotation rather than have him gut out the injury for the remainder of the season. There’s also an “outside chance” Luis Castillo will be activated Monday, Jerry said, and reinserted into a lefty-righty platoon with Damion Easley, at the expense of Argenis Reyes.
