Isles' Meyer steps up his game in Witt's absence

 
When Freddy Meyer's right shoulder connected with Jason Spezza's sternum, lifting the Ottawa star off his skates and depositing him on his back at mid-ice Sunday night, it was as though the Islanders defenseman knocked all the wind out of Scotiabank Place. Maybe the Senators still were enjoying their big win over Detroit the previous night, but Meyer's hit put Spezza out of the game and sent a message that the Isles were there to play a hard hockey game.
