Jeter, Yanks stare at Dead October

 
Derek Jeter looked like he didn’t know what to say. With a vacant look in his eyes, the captain of the Yankees talked about missing the postseason for the first time in his career, comparing it to the eight times he’s closed his season with a disappointing October (or November) loss. “It basically boils down to we weren’t good enough,” Jeter said. “Our team didn’t play well enough the whole season in order to get where we needed to be. It’s a huge disappointment. “You play 162 games; the best teams make it and the hottest team wins,” he added. “We weren’t one of the best teams. Over 162 games, there are no flukes.” And so the impossible dream officially died with Boston’s 5-4 win over Cleveland, a final that flashed on the scoreboard just minutes before the Yankees wrapped up their win over the Blue Jays.
