The way things are going, it looks like the Jets are going to be faced with a decision regarding Dewayne Robertson, the defensive tackle that nobody wants.
Speaking at yesterday’s NFL Owners’ meetings in Palm Beach, Fla., Broncos coach Mike Shanahan shot down reports that trade talks for Robertson have resumed. Surprisingly, Shanahan said Robertson, he of the bone-on-bone condition in his knee, flunked the Broncos’ physical. Not exactly a revelation, but his candor couldn’t have made the Jets too happy.
So what now?
There’s still a chance that Robertson could be traded before the draft, but it’ll be hard to move him for a draft pick because teams know he probably will be cut in early June, when a $3 million roster bonus is due. Is there a chance he could stay with the Jets? Sure, but it’s unlikely. He’s due to make $9.8 million in total compensation for 2008, a ridiculous amount for a starter, much less a backup.
