Jets likely to pass on Matt Ryan

 
This is the fifth in a series of pre-draft posts, analyzing the Jets’ needs and potential picks. Unit: Quarterback Need Rating (on a scale of 1 to 10): 7 What They’ve Got: A sticky situation, that’s what they’ve got. Kellen Clemens or Chad Pennington? Ostensibly, they will battle it out in training camp for the starting job, reminding us of the old John Madden saying: “If you have two quarterbacks, you don’t have any.” Or something like that. The future of the Eric Mangini-Mike Tannenbaum regime could be determined by how they handle this quarterback matter. Obviously, we know how Mangini feels about Pennington. You don’t take a longtime starter, a moderately successful QB, and toss him to the side of the road for half a season unless you have some serious reservations about him. Right now, Pennington is a $6 million insurance policy. The organization wants Clemens to nail down the starting job in camp and, unless he falls on his face in the preseason, he probably will ...
