Joba leaves game with shoulder injury

Joba Chamberlain left Monday night’s game with a stiff right shoulder, leaving the Yankees holding their breath and the season on the brink of disaster. Chamberlain was lifted after his 93rd pitch of the night, as catcher Pudge Rodriguez noticed something and called out manager Joe Girardi and assistant athletic trainer Steve Donahue. The extent of the injury is unknown. The Yankees are already thin in the starting rotation thanks to injuries to Chien-Ming Wang and Phil Hughes, so a serious injury to Chamberlain would be a devastating blow to their postseason hopes. Earlier in the night, Girardi announced a change in the No. 5 spot in the rotation, removing Darrell Rasner and inserting Dan Giese, who will start Friday in Anaheim. Chamberlain had allowed five runs on eight hits in 4-2/3 innings before leaving with the injury, having just given up a three-run homer to Michael Young two batters earlier to surrender a 4-2 lead.
