The Kennedy Proposal will provide financial relief to the NCAA and its institutions. The NCAA is currently in a recession; at least 18 universities have cut 38 athletic programs while more cuts are pending.
Increased tuition, the freezing and furloughing of employee salaries, changed athletic travel policies (including minimizing the number of traveling participants), the loss of media guides, the loss of media days and proposed shorten seasons have erected because of the recession. However, the KP is a multi-billion dollar reservoir.
According to ESPN Senior Writer Pat Forde, "College football maybe the most recession-proof sport in America." However, the FBS is missing its most lucrative and prime-time event—a playoff.
In front of the Committee of Energy and Commerce, Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson testified, "Simply put, the public is clamoring for these [playoff] games." According to Yahoo! Sports Writer Dan Wetzel, "The college football playoffs would have a chance ...
