Matt Holliday expected to reach the open market

 
Sporting News staff reports Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak and agent Scott Boras both expect outfielder Matt Holliday to reach the open market, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "We need to spend some time with Matt and his agent and share what our vision is, what we have to offer, and at some point I'm sure we will," Mozeliak told the newspaper. "But at the same time, that's part of why we traded for him, to get him here, and at some point you'd think he has a pretty good idea of what we have to offer. ... Most players, if they haven't agreed to terms at this point, it means they are working their way to the open market." The Cardinals have exclusive negotiating rights with Holliday until November 20, at which time Holliday would be free to sign with any team. The Cardinals have called re-signing Holliday a "high priority," though they deny that a formal offer has been made to Holliday. ... (link)
