Memphis assistant gets Marist job
Fresh off an appearance in the national championship game, Memphis assistant Jose “Chucky” Martin will be introduced as the Marist head coach later today, according to sources close to the coach. A New York native who played high school basketball at the Bronx powerhouse St. Raymond’s, Martin has developed a reputation as a top recruiter in the area.
While an assistant at Manhattan College, Martin was key to bringing in transfer Luis Flores, who put the Jaspers in the national spotlight by leading them to a win over Florida in the 2004 NCAA Tournament. At Drexel, Martin brought in Frank Elegar, who recently caught the eye of NBA scouts at the Portsmouth Tournament. Martin was an assistant at St. John’s before moving to Memphis to work with the Tigers and also worked with Drexel coach Bruiser Flint at UMass.
