The Mets have reached an agreement with free-agent right-hander Freddy Garcia on a minor-league contract.
The New York Mets, however, are trying to land another starting pitcher, and resigning free-agent left-hander Oliver Perez is their top priority.
Garcia, 33, will likely end up competing with Redding for the fifth spot in the rotation. Redding, who signed a one-year $2.25 million major-league contract, can also pitch out of the bullpen.
Garcia has only pitched 73 innings in the last two seasons due to a shoulder injury that required surgery in Aug. 2007.
He signed a minor-league contract with the Tigers last August and made three starts near the end of the season, going 1-1 with a 4.20 ERA.
A 10-year veteran, Garcia is 118-77 lifetime with a 4.07 ERA.
