NFL: 08/09 A Giant Start

 
The New York Giants will host the Washington Redskins in the opening game of the 2008 NFL season on Thursday September 4th. The Super Bowl champions open their campaign with a big divisional matchup. The kick-off may be put back by one and a half hours to accommodate televisation of the concluding night of the Republican convention in the USA. League spokesman Greg Aiello said on Wednesday that the NFL is talking with NBC - the network that will air the game in the USA - about changing the game's starting time to 7 p.m. – meaning a midnight kick-off for fans watching the game in the UK. The Super Bowl winner hosts the opening game of the season in a tradition started in 2004. That year the Colts visited the New England Patriots who had just won Super Bowl XXXVIII. The next season, the Oakland Raiders traveled to New England. In 2006, the Super Bowl XLI-winning Steelers hosted the Dolphins.
