“In Billy We Trust.”
It’s a mantra that all A’s fans are forced to remind themselves every time Billy Beane swings one of his shocking trades, and it was likely repeated throughout the Bay Area Monday afternoon, when rumors began floating of a Matt Holliday trade.
At first glance, this trade makes little sense for the supposedly rebuilding A’s.
Sure, Holliday is a great player, and he’ll slide right into the center of a lineup that desperately needed a big slugger, but he’s also in the last year of his contract and as a Scott Boras client, the odds of him resigning with the low-budget A’s are about as good as the odds of John McCain being our next president.
So assuming this is just a rental, how does it make any sense for an A’s team that everyone assumes is still a year or two from contending?
