Pennell now expected to take over for Olson

The drama never stops at Arizona. The Pac-10 school is expected to name Russ Pennell interim head coach Monday after associate head coach Mike Dunlap declined to accept the position when Lute Olson announced his resignation last night. Pennell most recently was an AAU coach in Phoenix and a broadcaster for Arizona State basketball games. He had spent eight years as an assistant at ASU, but it didn’t go well. Rob Evans relieved Pennell of his duties in a disagreement over job performance. Dunlap, who won two national Division II national titles at Metro State and was an assistant with the Denver Nuggets the past two years, apparently was upset AU AD Jim Livengood was unwilling to offer him a longer commitment as head coach and had indicated he would begin a national search for Olson’s replacement after the season.
