Pirates Ink Number Four Chambers

 
The Pirates got back to business, signing three more draft picks from the 2009 class. Outfielder Evan Chambers, the third-round pick and fourth overall, came to an agreement with the Pirates. Chambers hit .324 in 188 at bats with 13 doubles and 11 home runs, all while collecting 39 RBI and 27 stolen bases at talent rich Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Florida. Chambers started out a Gator, but transferred from the University of Florida to Hillsborough after the 2008 season.  This moved up his draft eligibility.  Players at four-year schools are not draft eligible until their junior year. Pittsburgh also signed a couple of second-tier draftees in shortstop John Gourley, the 13th-round pick, and Ryan Beckman, the 18th-round pick. High school athlete Gourley batted .477 (42 hits) including four home runs and 23 RBI in 88 at bats in his senior year at Easter Wayne High School in Goldsboro, N.C.
