Finally, after 101 seasons, the Pittsburgh Panthers may able to raise their right index finger in the air and say “We’re Number One!”
After a crazy week in college basketball, Pitt is poised to stand alone atop the national polls as the No. 1 ranking men’s basketball team in the country.
Since No. 1 North Carolina lost to unranked Boston College and No. 2 Connecticut lost to AP No. 11 Georgetown last Monday, the undefeated Panthers should move from No. 3 to the No. 1 ranking when the Associated Press and ESPN\USA Today coaches' polls are released Monday afternoon.
Pitt has been as high as No. 2 on three occasions, but never No. 1. The Panthers were No. 2 for one week in December of 1987, for two weeks in late December of 2002, and for three weeks in November and December of 2006.
