Red Sox name Matsuzaka as Opening Day pitcher

Daisuke Matsuzaka will be the starting pitcher for the Red Sox against the Oakland Athletics when Major League Baseball holds its Opening Day in Tokyo next week, Boston manager Terry Francona announced on Monday.

A major hurdle may have now been cleared for the Red Sox as Daisuke Matsuzaka’s wife has given birth to the couple’s second child and now it seems Matsuzaka may join the Sox when they travel to Japan to open the regular season. Dice-K had previously made it clear he planned to stay in America to be with his wife during the birth and not travel half way around the world.Dice-K to Start Season Opener in Japan

For a while, it seemed he would never make it, but Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka will be making the trip to Japan after the birth of his son . Now, Terry Francona has named Dice-K as the Opening Day starter when the A’s and Sox square off March 25 in Japan. Jon Lester is slated to start Game 2 of the season, also to be played in Japan.
