The Jets continued their free-spending ways today, except this time they doled out the big bucks for one of their own. Safety Kerry Rhodes has agreed to a five-year contract extension that will make him one of the highest-paid at his position, SNY is reporting.
Rhodes was entering the final season of his rookie contract, which means he would’ve been an unrestricted free agent in 2009. Negotiations began before the end of the season, and were painfully slow at times, but the Jets wanted to lock up one of their top young players and hammered out the deal.
The move, no doubt, will appease some veterans on the team, those who began to grumble after seeing the organization spend huge money on free agent Alan Faneca, Damien Woody, Calvin Pace and Kris Jenkins, who was acquired in a trade.
