Rex Ryan continues his re-structuring of the New York Jets staff as reports today have former University of Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh close to accepting a role as quarterback coach.
As a three-time Super Bowl champion, Cavanaugh certainly boasts an impressive CV for a positional coach, having collected rings as a back up quarterback for 1984's San Francisco and 1990's New York Giants and, more importantly, as Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator in 2000. Although clearly Ryan's hire, doubts remain over how large a say current Jets OC Brian Schottenheimer had in the selection and whether or not this could impact his long term future at the club.
With former Raiders coach Bill Callaghan training the offensive line, the Jets boast one of the most experienced offensive coaching staffs in the league, something they may need to rely on if Brett Favre's retirement finally comes to pass.
