I'm in a ruthless, sports team re-districting mood, and was reminded of a blurb I ran across recently about someone at Vanderbilt who tried (unsuccessfully) in the 1960's to create a "Magnolia League" made up of more academically-minded, athletically-challenged universities.
In the spirit of re-organizatioin, I am proposing my "Magnolia League"...Which should be invoked immediately. There will be some collateral damage to the lame conferences that these schools of which they are already members—but who really cares?
Granted, geographic proximity is thrown a little out the window, and adds to athletic team travel costs...but the match-ups would be great, exciting and much more fair.
Here are the founding member schools of the "Magnolia League":
1. Vanderbilt
2. Standford
3. Notre Dame
4. Northwestern
5. Duke
6. UVA
7. (Johns Hopkins, if it didn't go Ivy)
8. Univ. of Chicago or Emory. (and both are in if Hopkins leaves ...
