It's September and the San Francisco Giants are abysmal and will be for years. The front office might even be a mirror of the circus that is going on down US 101 with the 49ers. As I yearn for better days for my beloved Giants, I bet most sports fans, even Giants fans, don't know who the "Carson Crusher" was.
I do and so does my wife, who is the quintessential non-sports fan. She hails from the once-small town (Carson City, Nev.) of former San Francisco Giant superstar Matt Williams, the best thing the Giants had going for them since Willie Mays, Bobby Bonds, Orlando Cepeda, Juan Marichal and Willie McCovey. He was the Ronnie Lott of the Giants. If it were not for the strike in 1994, Williams was on pace to challenge Roger Maris' then-home run record. My dad knew that pain the strike meant for me, a searing pain that only loyal sports fans can have for their heroes. So my dad bought me one of 5,000 Rawlings bats signed by Williams, signifying his 43 HR season that was cut short by strike. One ...
