Brian Bruney was sent to replace Phil Hughes in the eight inning on Tuesday night's game against the Seattle Mariners. This had also caused the Yankees fans to send comments and criticism about the decision. No one knows the real reason manager Joe Girardi did so. There are people who will give you something acceptable or reasonable, but it doesn't mean it's the real reason. People can only guess. And my guess is Joe Girardi wants to give the Yankees' pitchers the chance to throw balls. It's good, actually, because the pitchers can check themselves if they're doing well and if they can face hitters with good results for their team.
It sounds like a trial and error because it is a trial and error, in a way. It's good if the pitcher is able to yield positive results. If he's just average or (still) below average, then he'll be able to work on his ...

Hughes Getting Very Comfortable in the Pen
slidingintohome.blogspot.com 7/1/2009 — Here's a quote from Hughes about his new role, via Peter Abraham : "I feel like I have more control, my stuff plays up a little bit," Hughes said. "It feels like a good fit for me. Who's to say what the future will be? Maybe this is what I do for the rest of my career." Still, Hughes sees the ...
Phil Hughes to assume eighth inning role?
lennysyankees.com 7/1/2009 — Joe Girardi continues to call Brian Bruney the setup man on this team, but after last night’s blown save in the eighth, Bruney might be degraded to middle relief. After watching Phil Hughes continue to dominate the sixth and seventh innings, it seems he could potentially replace Bruney for the ...
A Sensible Approach
yankeesredsox.com 7/2/2009 — Kudos to Joe Girardi for tonight's lineup. Against a tough lefty he moved Cano down to 6 (not a bad idea no matter who is pitching) and he let A-Rod DH instead of Matsui. I imagine it didn't escape the Yankees notice that Mike Lowell went on the DL yesterday because of his ...
Bruney is the 8th inning guy ... well, except for tonight
nydailynews.com 7/2/2009 — Before tonight’s game, we asked Joe Girardi about the eighth-inning situation last night. During the course of the press conference, the manager uttered the words “Bruney is our eighth-inning guy” no less than four times. Maybe ...
Bruney: It Doesn't Matter if I Pitch the 8th
slidingintohome.blogspot.com 7/2/2009 — From Mike Puma : Brian Bruney isn't launching a campaign to keep his eighth-inning job. The inconsistent Yankee reliever yesterday stopped short of saying he'd welcome a new role, but also made it known he wouldn't lose sleep if manager Joe Girardi were to make Phil Hughes the team's primary ...
Joe Girardi Blows It Bigtime —
Bleacher Report - MLB 7/1/2009
I'm not a guy who enjoys dogging Joe Girardi, not in the least bit possible.
I love supporting him, even when people question every little decision he makes when the Yankees lose games.
Being the manager in New York isn't a piece of cake, and ...
Griffey Jr. still thorn vs. Yanks —
NYDailyNews.com - Baseball 7/2/2009
With two outs in the sixth Wednesday night, Ken Griffey Jr. extended his arms and turned on Andy Pettitte's first pitch, a 90-mph fastball, and deposited the ball over the right field wall for his 10th home run of the season.
