The point guard position is one of utmost importance for any successful NBA franchise.
Point guards in the NBA are given differing degrees of power in the NBA. Point guards like Beno Udrich and Chucky Atkins act as the mouth of the coach, setting up plays and jump starting the offense. Elite point guards like Deron Williams often control the offense and calls the plays themselves.
Though the point guard position as a categorization is not always needed, if a potent player plays the position, the offense has the potential of becoming much more fluid and reflecting the abilities of the guard.
For example, the Chris Webber-era Sacramento Kings often fed Chris the ball in the high post and used him to jump start the offense.
Nontraditional point guards such as Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, and Andre Miller prove that if a capable player plays the one position, that player has the ability to make every single player on their team better.
