Varitek works diligently to solve slump

Though it was an off-day for Jason Varitek, the veteran catcher was drenched in sweat when he returned to his locker roughly an hour and 45 minutes before Tuesday night's game against the Rays.

Balfour induced a groundout from Mike Lowell to shortstop to end the inning. That keeps the score at 2-1, heading to the bottom of the eighth. Jason Varitek stays in to catch, with Craig Hansen on the mound in relief of Tim Wakefield.
