Weixlmann's Tidbits: Auburn-Mississippi State Combine for Five Points

The whole country knew the Auburn Tigers' defense was solid. Apparently, though, so is the Mississippi State defense. These two squads combined to score five points tonight. No, that's not a typo, Auburn won the defensive battle 3-2. In doing so, the Tigers allowed the Bulldogs to gain just 114 total yards, and essentially shut down any offense that Sylvester Croom's bunch tried to muster. Who knew that when Wes Byrum kicked a 35-yard field goal in the second quarter, it would be enough to get the victory. The quarterbacks, Chris Todd and Wesley Carroll, combined for just 232 yards through the air, and one interception by Carroll. The most telling stat of this game was that Auburn went 3-for-16 on third down conversions, and that was considered amazing by the Bulldogs' standards. Mississippi State went 0-for-14 against the mighty Auburn D on third down, and achieved just six first downs throughout the entire contest. If anyone was at this game, I'm sorry. (link)
