Who Is Carlos Delgado?

 
"MVP!  MVP!  MVP!"  At the end of the year, this was the chant heard in Shea Stadium when Delgado stepped up to bat.  He finished in ninth in the NL MVP race, but still had a great year. The 36-year-old had a .271 average, 38 homers, and 115 RBI's. How important will he be to the Mets this year? On Oct. 30th, Delgado's club option was exercised. How will he perform this year? Delgado has been a Met for three-and-a-half years, and during that time, had an average of .265. He hit 38 homers twice, and had a very good season this year. He does great in the playoffs. In 2006, he had a .351 average in two series, and was a threat whenever he stepped up to the plate. Was it smart to exercise his option? Most likely, he will hit 35 Homers with a .260 batting average in '09. After that, he will get much worse. Delgado is not the first baseman of the future for the Mets.
