Squawker Jon, I can’t believe you actually wrote with a straight face on Saturday that Jose Reyes was better than Derek Jeter. At least you seemed a little chastened by Reyes’ outrageous behavior on Sunday, (and by your Saturday comments) but still. True, my predictions this weekend were pretty awful, but at least I didn’t write this:
I was pleased to chant “o-ver-ra-ted” at Derek Jeter when he bobbled a grounder by Fernando Tatis in the fourth (it looked like an error, but was ruled a hit). But Jeter wouldn’t let himself get picked off in that situation. Today, I’d rather have the 25-year-old supertalented Met shortstop over the 34-year-old Yankee shortstop who is starting to fade, but Manuel’s most important task remains figuring out how to get Reyes to play with the kind of smarts Jeter has always had.
You know what else Jeter wouldn’t have done? Thrown his glove and sunglasses to the ground in anger if it had been ruled an error, the way Reyes did after being ...
