The manager speaks after last night’s debacle: “We struggled a little bit like this down the stretch last year,” Willie Randolph said. “That happens sometimes in bullpens. We need to get a little more length from our starters. We need to score a few more runs, which takes a lot of pressure off your bullpen.” The Mets blow an early lead and allow the lowly Nationals, who can’t hit, to score 10 runs. Sounds a lot like what happened during last year’s collapse. Oh, wait, it wasn’t one of the worst collapses in baseball history, it was struggling a little bit down the stretch! Glad we’ve cleared that up. And why should anyone worry about Met relievers giving up two grand slams in three days to the likes of Ronny Cedeno and Felipe Lopez, not exactly the Ruth and Gehrig of the 21st century? “That happens sometimes in bullpens.” Wilie offers two solutions.
