For Cubs fans, the Verducci effect is an old and familiar foe, even if they have never heard of it. First set forth by Sports Illustrated baseball guru Tom Verducci , the theory concerns escalating innings totals for young pitchers. If, before a player's age 26 season, his team sends him out for 30 or more professional innings (Majors and Minors combined) in excess of his previous career high, they have violated the Verducci rule (an implicit corollary), and can expect declining performance and heightened risk of injury in the following season. Both Mark Prior and Kerry Wood were overused, by this line of reckoning, and the results were predictably catastrophic. As they have done several times over the last decade, the hapless Pittsburgh Pirates committed just such a sin in 2007. That year, they sent left-hander Tom Gorzelanny out for 201 2/3 innings, second-most on the team and some 40 1/3 innings more than he had accrued during a 2006 campaign split between Pittsburgh and Triple-A ...

Depressed... To the point of confusion. Why is this happening? Isn't being a Cubs fan bad enough, let alone having to deal with this? How close is this team to being listed among the elites? Five plays? Where do we go now? This is probably the most difficult question to answer for someone who bleeds blue and gold. I don't know. I am usually happy to offer my opinion on the current sport's debates. Does this loss mean we have to give up on the Irish? I don't know. Perhaps this is the worst part. My whole life I grew up believing...no, knowing, that the Irish would eventually bring glory back to South Bend and silence all their critics who said they were no longer a factor in the big picture. It's rough playing the second night of back-to-back games. The team is usually showing fatigue. By the time the third period rolls around, it's understandable to see the team struggling. That's what happened to the Ducks on Saturday night when they battled the San Jose Sharks in a 3-2 loss. Funny thing is, it was the Sharks who played their second game of a back-to-back, not the Ducks. Could have fooled me. This season, the Ducks have been completely incapable of keeping their momentum going from game to game. Just when it looks like they've turned things around and have found the fire they need to play physical and win games, they follow up a victory with an embarrassing loss.
