Old players coming back to the NBA is
nothing new. In fact, the trend can be traced
back to George Mikan, who was just the first of several members of the 50 Greatest Players List who left the game for at least one full season only to resume their playing careers.

After Gregg Popovich moved Manu Ginobili into the
starting lineup, San Antonio won four of five games
versus the Hornets. Ginobili scored a game-high 26 points in the clincher, including 11 points in the final 3:09 of the first half as the Spurs took the lead for good. Chris Paul was officially credited with 14 assists in game seven but only nine of them fit the literal definition of an assist.
The Detroit Pistons swear up and down that
they are a better team this year without Ben
Wallace, who signed with the Chicago Bulls prior to this season. On Wednesday night, the Bulls beat the Pistons 106-88 even though Detroit had its full complement of players while Chicago was without the services of Wallace (sinus infection) and Andres Nocioni (foot injury).
Scoring 2000 points in an NBA season requires
a rare combination of productivity and durability. If a
player participates in all 82 games he must average 24.4 ppg to reach this milestone. Every missed game requires an extra .3 ppg to stay on pace for 2000 points.

Detroit defeated Cleveland 87-82 in the first game
of ABC's Sunday doubleheader. It is looking more and
more like Cleveland could be a first round casualty in the postseason. Chicago has passed Cleveland in the standings and the Cavaliers are now on a collision course toward a first round matchup with the defending NBA champion Miami Heat.
A recent (and still ongoing) exchange about Kobe
Bryant that is taking place in the comments section
of 20 Second Timeout is a vivid example of why blogging is booming and newspapers are scrambling to catch up: readers and bloggers interact, while newspaper writers have little, if any, interaction with their readers. The interactive nature of a blog means, ideally, that facts win out eventually.
After receiving phone calls from Michael Jordan and
other Charlotte Bobcats' officials, ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith
apologized on the Sunday morning SportsCenter for his comments during ESPN's coverage of the NBA Draft, when he described the Bobcats' Brandan Wright for Jason Richardson trade as "stupid." It is always better to engage one's brain before activating one's mouth.
I wish that I had a dollar for
every time someone says that Team USA's previous losses
in FIBA play were primarily caused by a lack of shooters on the roster. This is simply not true. Team USA played poor defense in those events, which also meant that they could not generate very many fast break points. With Kobe Bryant and Jason Kidd on the team, this is no longer a problem.
Few players possess the necessary quickness and jumping
ability to accumulate at least 100 steals and 100
blocked shots in the same season. In 2006-07, just three players accomplished this: Shawn Marion, Josh Smith and Ben Wallace This is an updated version of an article that was originally published last year at NBCSports.com.
It took several years for the three point
shot to really catch on in the NBA but
now teams are bombing away from the perimeter more than ever before, led by the Phoenix Suns.
For the past 23 years, Jim Barnett has
been the color commentator on local Golden State Warriors'
broadcasts and if you have not heard him do a game then you have missed a real treat: he is analytical, he does not get hyper and even though he clearly supports the Warriors he is definitely not a homer.
This article discusses the 13 NBA and ABA
teams that reached the Finals despite having a regular
season winning percentage of .550 or less (roughly equal to 45 wins or less in an 82 game season).

Kobe Bryant scored a game-high 39 points while
shooting 16-30 from the field as his Lakers beat
the Spurs 100-92 to eliminate the defending champions 4-1. He had 27 points in the second half, 17 points in the fourth quarter and eight points in the final 2:22. This outburst capped off a remarkable Western Conference Finals for Bryant, who averaged 29.2 ppg on 64-120 (.533) field goal shooting.
Team USA trailed for most of the first
quarter but built a 15 point halftime lead and
held on to post an 87-76 win over Australia at Qizhong Arena in Shanghai. Dwyane Wade again provided a major lift off of the bench, scoring a game-high 22 points.
Rick Barry appeared on ESPN's "Mike and Mike
in the Morning" to talk about how LeBron James
could become even better and about Kobe Bryant's request to be traded. Barry made a total of six main points, which I will list below, with my comments in italics.
This summer, NBA TV aired a wonderful show
titled "Red and Me: Bill Russell." It is a
half hour tribute to Red Auerbach that is narrated by Bill Russell and contains a lot of footage from their great partnership. This program conveys a lot of insight about the dynamics of the coach-player relationship.
If the Boston Celtics maintain their current pace
as a defensive team then they have a shot
to win more than 60 games. It usually takes teams time to jell defensively but the Celtics have thrived right from the start at that end of the court.
Paul Pierce scored 17 of his season-high 31
points in the second quarter and Ray Allen had
15 of his 17 points in the third quarter of a 101-86 Boston victory at Indiana. The Celtics were not operating at their peak level, which makes it all the more impressive that they won on the road.
Leadership is not about being a "rah, rah"
guy or about giving good soundbites so that you
sound like a nice guy; leadership is about helping an individual or a group of people achieve a common goal. Kobe Bryant is the leader of the L.A. Lakers and he provided abundant examples of his leadership before, during and after the team's 134-114 victory over Indiana at Conseco Fieldhouse on Tuesday.
LeBron James is able to score 30-plus points
while still putting up triple double numbers, a skill
set that is very rare for a perimeter player; only Oscar Robertson and Michael Jordan did this on a consistent basis.
