With the great addition of pitch type and
velocity numbers here on FanGraphs, as well as the
proliferation of Pitch F/X data, we’ve seen some great analysis of pitchers and the potential causes for their success and failure. In particular, ...
Nice analysis of how Mike Mussina has adapted
his pitching style in recent years to offset a
decline in velocity.
When the A’s decided yesterday to trade Rich
Harden to the Cubs for a package of players
that lacks a guy that you could point to as a potential star, they knew they were giving up one of the most talented arms in baseball. When Harden’s ...
The Nationals just had a great comeback against
the Marlins this afternoon. The final game graph (unofficially)
looks like this: The Marlins newly acquired Jorge Julio pretty much blew the entire game for them with a WPA of -.903 wins. The ...
The other day I attended an Orioles game
and just like every other baseball game I’ve been
to in my entire life, I didn’t catch a foul ball. I didn’t catch a home run ball either, but that would have been impossible where I was ...
Hey all. My name is David Cameron, and
I’m thrilled to have been invited by David Appelman
to join in the great work he’s been doing here at FanGraphs. You may have read some things I’ve written elsewhere, either at USSMariner , The ...
During the last few days, I’ve been asked
the “Is Frank Thomas done?” question several times, as
Mariner fans wonder if he is the right fit to take Jose Vidro’s spot at DH. During these conversations, I’ve mentioned that ...
With the first day of the major league
draft behind us, for some people, the countdown can

I love the BIS pitch data statistics that
are available here on FanGraphs. One of the first
things we noticed using that data this season was that Justin Verlander ’s fastball disappeared in April. He was throwing 91-92 instead of his usual ...

I’d imagine that most of you have probably
heard of the term “AAAA player”, the characterization given
to guys who achieve success in Triple-A but haven’t shown that they can sustain success in the major leagues. These guys ...
With the trade deadline just a few weeks
away and the C.C. Sabathia and Rich Harden moves
thrusting the spotlight back on the veterans-for-young-players deals, one name comes up time and time again in regards to the Los Angeles Dodgers - Matt Kemp . ...
Well, the trade deadline has passed which means
that teams can no longer exchange players and that
players cannot change teams from here on out. Or wait, nevermind, they still can, just not through conventional methods. Players can still switch sides ...

On the plus side, he’s been the best
hitter in the American League this year. Combined with
his excellent 2007 performance, he’s now strung together 515 at-bats of MVP caliber offense. He’s a switch-hitter, he gets on base, he hits for power, and he can still run a little bit. He’s just 30 years old and is showing no signs of physical decline.
Happy (belated) New Year everyone. If you haven’t
noticed, FanGraphs now has all historical players dating back
to 1871 after heavily massaging the data found at baseball-databank.org . More on that later. With the 2007 season sneaking up on...

There’s an interesting thread going on over at
Sons of Sam Horn that eventually delved into Manny
Ramirez ’s clutch hitting abilities. There’s currently a stat displayed on FanGraphs called “Clutch”. This Tangotiger...
On Saturday, April 12th, the Rays promoted highly
touted prospect Evan Longoria to the major leagues and
handed him their third base job after placing Willy Aybar on the disabled list. Six days later, the Rays have announced that they’ve signed ...
