Atlanta Journal Constitution: Hawks sign Maurice Evans

Atlanta Journal Constitution: Hawks sign Maurice Evans The contract is 3 years and 7.5 million, which is a little more than Golden State was prepared to give him.

This year's summer project

We're reaching the dog days of August, when there isn't much on the NBA schedule, save for Olympic coverage.  I've traditionally shied away from doing much with the Olympics or World Championships because there are rarely Wizards involved, but since Darius Songaila is playing for Lithuania, we'll probably discuss it a little bit. Otherwise, though, there's not much out there to ...

Arenas has craved to be acknowledged as the alpha male. Now he is. His contract numbers emphasize it. So it is time for him to respond accordingly in deed and spirit. It is time for him to be the leader type he has resisted being. It is time for him to get in the faces of big-name opponents and see them as threats to his potential legacy. It is his team, his city and his ...

If it ain't broke, don't break it.

You know, the internet is an amazing place.  Only on the Information Superhighway can you find quick access to stats, stories, press conferences , stories from the Summer League , and other stuff that you wouldn't see anywhere else in the world. For some reason, I don't think Charles Oakley is the computer type.  You can debate that all you want, but I just don't see ...

Taking a step back with Josh Childress

Note: This is somewhat off-topic.  My current summer job requires me to do a ton of research for past newspaper articles in an attempt to check the claims made in the script of a documentary that's set to air on PBS sometime in the near future.  As such, LexisNexis has basically become my new best friend. So when the news about Josh Childress defecting to Greece broke today, I ...

The Warriors have until Friday to match the offer [for Kelenna Azubuike], but two NBA sources said they will not because they signed forward Maurice Evans, who split time between the Lakers and Orlando last season, to a three-year, $6.4 million deal. Riverside Press Enterprise . If true, this takes another small forward off the market. Also, Josh Childress is really going to Greece .

"All of those little things I've done in the past are going to come to a halt," he said. "I think I'm up to the task. I just need to cut out some of the foolishness I do." Then, in the same breath, Arenas almost contradicted himself. "You know? But, I think it's a good thing. I create hype, I create excitement but some of that other stuff (like undercutting his head coach) I know I have to ...

We just have a great group of guys. I know everybody's here to see me, but it's about this team. They've done a great job, and we're gonna put a banner up there, a championship banner, we're gonna do it for Mr. Pollin. That's what kind of talent, that's what kind of team, that's what kind of belief we have....We have to start today, and these three guys up here [Abe Pollin, Ernie Grunfeld, ...

As Dan pointed out this morning , Gilbert's press conference for his new contract is happening today.  When he did his press conference the first time around, he made the bold prediction that the Wizards would make the playoffs.  It ...
Lessons from tracking Dominic McGuire and his all-around game

As the free agent forwards fly off the market, it's looking more likely that the Wizards will enter next season with Dominic McGuire as the backup small forward.  That's not to say that he's the only guy currently on the roster that can fill the role, as Andray Blatche and Antawn Jamison can play the small forward position in a pinch, but he's the natural fit.  If he could provide ...

We might not have to deal with Josh Childress in the Eastern Conference this year. Or the Western conference... Remember that bizarre Antawn Jamison to Greece rumor ? Maybe we just had that thing wrong the whole time.

Evaluating everyone's Summer League performance in 10 words or less

Because brevity is the key to good writing... Andray Blatche: Looks stronger.  Played inside more.  Still struggles finishing. Dominic McGuire: Displayed mid-range game.  Still a tiger on the glass. Nick Young: Very concerning performance.  Lacked explosion to change speeds and finish. Dee Brown: Pushes the ball well.  Was a bit erratic. JaVale McGee: Very ...

The 2008 Summer League by the numbers

39-43 - The team's expected win-loss record based on point differential if the summer league had been 82 games long. 3 - Number of Wizards that shot 50% or higher from the field (Dee Brown, Frank Elegar, Dominic McGuire). 2.4 - The average number of assists per game by Dee Brown, tying him for the highest average on the team.  Who does he share that honor with?  Andray Blatche. ...

Truth About It: The Wizards and Darius Miles: Why Not? With guys like Matt Barnes, Tony Allen and Bostjan Nachbar off the board, perhaps Miles deserves a look for the vets minimum. Truthaboutit breaks down the pluses and minuses of a potential Miles signing.

"I want to be this team's defensive stopper at that (small forward spot)," said McGuire, who shot a crisp 62.5 percent from the field in five SL games and showed off a much improved mid-range jump shot. " I've worked so hard on my game this summer and I'm much more familiar with where I need to be on the floor. I think I can help this team. " That's what I like to hear! Also, check ...

Well that wasn't the last memory we wanted...

Well, that was pretty much the worst quarter of basketball I've ever seen.  Everything was going pretty well prior to that point.  We weren't rebounding, but despite playing our bench guys more than usual, we were in the lead because we were shooting the ball exceptionally well.  Guys like Dontaye Draper and Frank Elegar were shining, playing like they wanted that roster spot ...

Open Thread: Summer League Game 5

Tonight, the Wizards' Summer League season comes to an end with a game against the Suns.  Other than seeing Darius Songaila playing for Lithuania in the Olympics next month, this will be the last chance that you'll get to see any Wizards in action until October. I'm doubting that we'll see any dramatic revelations from Nick or JaVale tonight, but I'm still hopeful that I'm wrong.  ...
