The needle is on empty. I’ve got nothing
left. I’ve written every last glowing, positive, gleeful word
I know in association with this team and none of it seems to properly do it justice. I simply cannot explain how blessed and honored I feel to be a fan of this team right now. I can only imagine what might happen if they go all the way and win the championship.
We are only 27 games into the season
and the team has as many wins this year
(24) as it did all last year. That kind of turnaround is enough to make any fan base get a little bit giddy. But there's a growing sentiment around the country that Celtics fans are getting on people's nerves.
For the second straight year, I organized a
group of bloggers (which is a little like herding
cats) to come up with some NBA Previews in the preseason. It was great fun and there was a ton of great insight into each team that you don't normally get from the mainstream media.
Zack Randolph: 24 pts., 15 reb. Eddie Curry:
19 pts., 6 reb. Total tally Knicks: 43 pts.,
21 reb. Kevin Garnett: 20 pts., 13 reb. Kendrick Perkins: 24 pts., 8 reb. Total tally Celtics: 44 pts., 21 reb. Looks pretty even doesn't it? If I just gave you those stats before you saw the game, could you tell me who won? Now look at the +/- stat.
Everyone seems to be picking the Lakers to
win this series, including the (no longer Boston) Sports
Guy. I can see the reasoning. It actually makes sense from a certain point of view. In a world of "what have you done for me lately," the Lakers are the fashionable pick. I don't blame anyone for picking the Lakers, I just think they're wrong. Here's why:
So what’s the deal? How are these teams
doing it? How do you beat the Celtics? I
don’t presume to know as much as the NBA scouts do, but I have a few ideas of how teams have started attacking the Celts. Here is a blueprint for Celtics opponents:
So here we are. Let's accept it. This
team stinks on the road. Nobody can explain it.
They were fine in the regular season, but somehow the higher pressure of road playoff games is getting to this group. It is no longer a little monkey on their backs. Nor is it any longer the 300 lb. gorilla in the room. It is officially the 300 lb. gorilla on their backs.
I can't help but wonder if our top
assistant might have several interested teams knocking on his
door with large contract offers to become their head coach. You can't blame Tom for wanting to take on the challenge (and paycheck) of being a head coach in the NBA.
Did that really just happen? Was it all
a bad dream? I knew going to bed last
night that those would be my first thoughts waking up. As a Celtics blogger and a self appointed voice of Celtics fans everywhere, I'm supposed to have something to say about all this. But I have to admit that I'm still dumbfounded.
KG sets the tone early.
Why isn't Pierce considered one of the top
10 to 15 players? The simplest answer is what
fans like to call "Evil Paul." As in a superhero's bad twin. As in a split personality. As in, most of the time we see a brilliant scorer, passer, rebounder, teammate, and even defender (Good Paul). But every once in a while, we see a ball hogging, shot forcing, immature, non-defender (Evil Paul).
Last and certainly not least, a shout out
goes out to Hawks fans everywhere. The Phillips Arena
was absolutely rocking all series long and it was a major boost to your team. You really did "shock the world" simply by forcing the series to seven games, and the home court deserves a lot of credit. Well done.
Detractors say that he is merely the "world's
greatest complementary player" and his supporters (Cornbread Maxwell among
them) put him on a pedestal even higher than the likes of Larry Bird. A fun and fascinating debate topic to be sure, but personally I'm not sure I care.
When LeBron was held to 2-18 shooting in
game one, you could excuse us for thinking it
was just an off night for him. When he is then held to 6-24 shooting, as he was tonight, you have to start giving credit to the Celtics amazing defense. Sure he got his 21 points and 6 assists, but in no way was he a factor in this game.
A lot will be written in the coming
days about the Boston Celtics and their march to
the 17th championship in their storied history. Some will take the tact of comparing this team to the great teams in Celtics past. Some will talk about the utter defensive dominance. Others will focus on the team’s three stars and their very first individual championships. Not this guy.
Welcome to the newest edition of the CelticsBlog
NBA page's newest feature, Runnin' Fives. Over the course
of the next few months, we'll be picking a five-man all-time team for each of the Association's thirty currently active franchises.
Celtics just added some much needed depth at
the power forward spot.
When I was growing up, like a lot
of kids I collected baseball cards. I'd open up
a package of 1987 Topps and flip through the cards thinking got it, got it, got it, need it, got it, need it, etc. (I was sure that that Mark McGwire rookie card was going to be worth a fortune 20 years later). This point in the offseason feels a little like that. We have some holes in our lineup due to free ...
Speaking as someone who has a bad case
of Rondoism, I've told anyone that will listen that
I have no worries about our starting point guard position. That does not, however, change the fact that he is still a second year point guard in a league where ...
