Roger Huerta scored his fifth victory of the
year Saturday night in the Octagon, but it wasn’t
easy. Huerta was on his way to a unanimous decision loss to Clay Guida. Guida was on top in all three judges’ scorecards and Huerta knew he had to pull out something big. He did just that by submitting Guida with a rear naked choke at :51 of round three.
Even though the Chuck Liddell-Wanderlei Silva fight this
Saturday is the most anticipated fight in UFC history,
the outcome might not even mean anything. Both fighters are coming off of two straight losses, but Liddell’s losses have been much more publicized and in far greater shocking fashion. His loss to Rampage Jackson came at a time when Liddell was the face of the UFC.
On Thursday, in this very column, I wrote
that even if Chuck Liddell beat Wanderlei Silva it
might not even matter. Well, after Chuck put in his 15 minutes on Saturday night, I was proven completely wrong.
I have a question for my most loyal
reader, E-ROC. Did Georges St-Pierre finally prove something to
you on Saturday night? I will answer for you: he absolutely did. GSP beat Matt Hughes at 4:54 of the second round by verbal submission via an armbar. It wasn’t a surprise that St-Pierre beat Hughes to win the interim Welterweight Championship but the fashion in which he did it.
Diego Sanchez recently noted on his Myspace page
that his next fight would be in February against
a yet to be named opponent. The biggest news out of that was that he will remain at 170 pounds in the Welterweight division. There had been rumors circulating that Sanchez was going to drop down to the lightweight division due to his recent outings in the Octagon.
Coming off of perhaps their best pay-per-view of
all-time in UFC 79, the premiere fighting organization has
no where to go but down for their next venture at UFC 80 on January 19th. It’s no ones fault, but there’s just no way anything can top two of the greatest fights in UFC history.
One of the biggest names in the UFC
is back in the news. Tito Ortiz has been
offered a fight against Lyoto Machida. Machida is fresh off his victory over Sokoudjou at UFC 79. Ortiz has not fought in the Octagon since his draw against Rashad Evans at UFC 73 in July. Ortiz hasn’t won a fight since his victory over Ken Shamrock in October 2006.
Brock Lesnar made his UFC debut in spectacular
fashion last night. Prior to making his first appearance,
Lesnar’s debut was hyped more than any fighter in UFC history. Everything was in place for Lesnar to make a giant splash in the heavyweight division; that was until Frank Mir grabbed a hold of Lesnar’s right leg.
Question: What does a victory over a future
UFC Hall of Famer get you? Answer: Apparently not
very much if your name is Keith Jardine. Jardine last fought in the Octagon in September when he won a split decision over Chuck Liddell.
Fresh off his victory over Wanderlei Silva, Chuck
“The Iceman” Liddell is now set to take on
another legend in Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. The fight is scheduled for June 14th in London, England. Rua is considered by many to be the best light-heavyweight in the world despite his loss to Forrest Griffin in September.
I can’t believe I’m about to do this
but I feel the need to defend Matt Serra.
If you’ve read my blog with any regularity, you know Matt Serra is about my least favorite person in the UFC. Serra was set to defend his Welterweight Championship against Matt Hughes at UFC 79 before he herniated two discs in his back.
Mauricio “Shogun” Rua was forced to pull out
of his June 7th bout with Chuck Liddell on
Tuesday. Rua ruptured the ACL in his left knee, the same injury he had surgery to repair last October. There is no timetable for his return to the Octagon.
“Sugar” Rashad Evans has been announced as the
replacement for “Shogun” Rua to face Chuck Liddell at
UFC 85 to take place on June 7th in London, England. It will be the biggest fight in Evans career. Originally slated for a May fight against Thiago Silva, Evans will now have a chance to make his biggest impact since coming into the UFC.
Thiago Alves will get the biggest chance of
his career when he steps in the Octagon against
Matt Hughes on June 7th. This main event replaces the original of Chuck Liddell versus Rashad Evans since Liddell had to withdraw due to an injury. Hughes has not fought since his lost to Georges St. Pierre in December. This fight puts to rest any and all talk of Hughes retiring after the St. Pie rre ...
Leading up to the UFC Heavyweight Championship bout
between Tim Sylvia and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira I decided
to watch several of Nogueira’s fights from Pride. One thing that became apparent early on is Nogueira constantly takes a beating in his fights. All the punishment has turned Nogueira into a not very attractive man.
The card for Saturday night’s UFC pay-per-view is
so deep that three stars are relegated to preliminary
bouts and will only be seen on the pay-per-view should time allow. A former world champion and the first winner of The Ultimate Fighter will have their bouts before the bright lights shine for the night.
There is no doubt in my mind that
the fight Saturday night between Anderson Silva and Dan
Henderson will be a Fight of the Year candidate and maybe even one of the best fights in the history of the UFC. Henderson is the Pride Middleweight Champion and was the only fighter in Pride history to hold belts in two different weight classes at once.
In addition to what could potentially be the
Match of the Year between Anderson Silva and Dan
Henderson, the UFC 82 under card is filled with UFC legends and possible legends in the making. I’ll get to the Silva-Henderson showdown in my next article, but let’s get started on this under card.
UFC 82: Pride of a Champion had a
ton of hype for the entire card that made
the bouts tough to live up to. Several fighters had a lot to fight for but had lackluster performances.
Anderson Silva proved himself not only the best
pound-for-pound fighter in the world on Saturday night, but
now talk must begin as Silva possibly being the best ever to fight in the Octagon. Silva submitted Pride Middleweight Champion Dan Henderson at 4:52 of the second round with a rear naked choke.
