A pair of IndyCar Series teams will test
for the 2008 season on Monday at Sebring International
Raceway. Panther Racing and Target Chip Ganassi Racing will do the honors on the legendary road course. For Panther, they'll test two prosective drivers in P.J. Chesson and Leilani Munter. TCGR sends out new recruit Alex Lloyd and 2005 series champion Dan Wheldon.
Thanks to a well-timed infomercial, Scott Sharp helped
get MVN IndyCar writer Chris Estrada hooked on the
Indy Racing League as a boy. Now, as Sharp prepares to say goodbye to the open-wheel series and hello to full-time sports car racing, Estrada looks back on how the situation's come to this and on the career of one of the IRL's most important figures.

Only one driver has been with the Indy
Racing League since its inception in 1996. But 39-year-old
Scott Sharp is ready for a new career path. Sharp and sponsor Patron Tequila will switch from the IRL to the American Le Mans Series in 2008, the final result of a saga that saw Sharp and Patron sue Rahal Letterman Racing to get out of their contracts with the team.
Despite Champ Car co-ownership saying that talks between
their side and the Indy Racing League have been
suspended, the IRL major domos are still flying to Japan today in order to persuade Twin Ring Motegi officials to move back their IndyCar race date, so a number of Champ Car events can be absorbed into the 2008 schedule.
Merger talks remain ongoing between the IRL and
Champ Car, but time is running out...

February 22, 2008 will go down in history
as the day American open-wheel racing chose peace instead
of war. But if the 12 years of chaos between the IRL and Champ Car were long, it may well pale to the amount of time it takes to bring open-wheel back to prominence. Indeed, the work now really begins for the unified IndyCar Series.
