Kansas City had battled back to within one run as the game entered the 6th inning last night. The Royals’ hitters, while certainly not efficient, were by and large having good at-bats: working counts, swinging at good pitches (well, not you Mark Teahen) and driving the ball into gaps. Then, however, the bullpen came into play. For a fair portion of the season, that was a good thing. ...

The Royals land on the shores of Lake Erie this evening to begin what should be an epic three game set against the Cleveland Indians. Why epic, you ask? Epic because this is our annual series where the Royals look to climb out of the soul sucking position known as last place in the American League Central.
Or, maybe not.
But the Royals are a game and a half behind the Indians, so a ...

It all sounds pretty straightforward to me, but apparently the act of playing decent baseball was an unfathomable concept for the Royals this past weekend. They spoiled a good start on Saturday by Zack Greinke (6.2 IP, O ER) and did all they could to spoil Gil Meche’s fine outing (6 IP, 1 ER) before pulling out a Friday night win. By Sunday, the Royals were hapless.

UPDATE: It’s a done deal. The press release follows:
The Kansas City Royals tonight announced they have reached an agreement with first round draft choice Eric Hosmer, the third overall selection in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft. Consistent with team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
“We are delighted to come to terms with Eric Hosmer. We felt that he was ...

From the press release:
The Kansas City Royals today announced they have reached an agreement with fourth round draft choice Tim Melville. Consistent with team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
“We are very pleased to announce the signing of Tim Melville. Tim, his family, and advisor Jason Cook remained committed to this process from start to finish,” said Deric Ladnier, ...

At least they scored.
And that four home runs in a row thing was special. Thanks to Joel Peralta for lighting the fuse. And to Robinson Tejada for the exclamation point.
Anyone else have a feeling this team is about to embark on another double-digit losing streak? Yankee Stadium isn’t exactly where this team needs to be as they’re experiencing their latest death ...

The Royals have not scored a run since late Sunday afternoon when Tony Pena Jr., of all people, drove in the winning run against Minnesota. Admittedly, Kansas City did not play on Monday, but the way the offense has been performing the last two games certainly makes it seem likely that playing a game would have made any difference in the time elapsed since they last scored.
Frankly, the ...

Brian Bannister didn’t pitch poorly. Far from it. He allowed only four hits and two walks. Unfortunately, three of those hits left the yard. Such are the dangers of pitching in The Cell - it’s the second easiest park to homer in this year behind Camden Yards. Fortunately, he was able to limit the damage because homers aside, he allowed only three base runners.
He also struck out seven ...

If you think major leaguers start to wear down in the heat of August, imagine what it’s like down in the minors. Strange things happen this time of year, like Omaha catcher Brayan Pena playing three games at third base and some more in rightfield due to injuries and promotions.
With just a touch over three weeks left in most minor league campaigns let’s take a look around the ...

What’s the deal with the Royals when they play the Twins? Does Minnesota possess some kind of Kansas City Kryptonite?
At least Sunday went well. Kind of.
A couple of notes from the weekend…
– The Royals traded Horacio Ramirez to the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night for minor league outfielder Paulo Orlando. Talk about turning lemons into lemonade. Not that Ramirez was a ...

Let me preface this entire article by saying that I don’t think the Kansas City Royals are going to post a .500 record this season. That said, the Royals are playing better baseball as of late. Even with the disappointing home series loss to the Red Sox, Kansas City is still 10-9 since the All-Star Break, having played sixteen of those games against teams contending for the playoffs. ...

I’m not a fan of the knuckleball. Personal preference, that’s all. I don’t like watching a guy throw slower than cars traveling on I-35 and hitters flail around like drunken beer league softball players. Especially when the batters doing the flailing are the Kansas City Royals.
Seriously, what the hell is the deal?
Actually, it’s tough to act surprised that this group of ...

Tuesday night’s 8-2 loss to the Red Sox really came down to Boston had Josh Beckett (the good one, not that other guy that shows up sometimes) throwing and the Royals had Brian Bannister (Version 2008) on the hill. That’s a mismatch and the game played out that way.
When it was all said and done, Bannister was tagged for just three runs, but did not make it out of the fifth ...

You knew there would be some suspensions as a result of the Sox-Royals dustup last Sunday. Five games for Olivo is probably plenty, but kind of the standard for charging the mound and landing a punch. One game for Hillman - again standard - and two for Ozzie Guillen were also to be expected.
Now, NO suspension for D.J. Carrasco was suprising. Sure the bases were loaded and hence it hardly ...

The Royals now have seven wins in their last eight games. During that time, they’ve picked up two wins each from Kyle Davies, Zack Greinke and now Gil Meche. While I think discussing wins for starting pitchers is overrated, there’s some merit to mentioning this: The Royals are jumping to an early lead and getting quality innings from their starters. It’s kind of what we had in mind at the ...

Don’t look now, but the Kansas City Royals are 9-7 since the All-Star Break. That record includes taking four of six from the once division leading White Sox and splitting a four game set with the A.L. East leading Tampa Bay Rays. Considering the Royals trotted out an outfield of Ross Gload, Mitch Maier and Mark Teahen this weekend and scored TWENTY-THREE runs in the two games, it ...

Today we are back with the Authority’s monthly minor league All-Star Team. As a refresher, you can take a quick look back at June’s team and May’s team .
Keep in mind, that the spots on this squad are awarded based on the players’ season long performances, with a fair amount of weight given to the most recent month’s work. Also, the player has to be a current ...

Hate to say I told you so:
With the market for their most of their players at an all-time low, it’s difficult to see Dayton Moore pulling the trigger on a deal before the deadline. The guys that would bring the most value (Greinke, Meche and DeJesus) are also the most valuable to the team and their long term goals. The logical guys like Mahay and Grudz won’t net enough return to make it ...

I would not call the Royals’ 4-3 extra inning win yesterday a well played ballgame. Yet a road sweep, even over a depleted Oakland A’s team, is still a good thing.
What Went Right:
- Mike Aviles added three more hits, including two doubles, to his already impressive totals (.325/.350/.528). The rookie shortstop has 10 extra base hits in his 57 post All-Star Break plate ...

If you didn’t enjoy Tuesday’s game, you don’t like baseball. It’s as simple as that.
Honestly, I can’t think of a better game I’ve seen all year. But I’m a sucker for well pitched baseball. Give me a quality 1-0 or 2-1 game and I’m happy. Games with football scores don’t really do much for me.
A Gil Meche versus Greg Smith is just the kind of matchup I’m looking for on a late Tuesday ...
