Jose Contreras is not to be trusted

Sunday, Jose Contreras was placed on the disabled list, retroactive to 7/18, due to elbow tendonitis. Contreras currently sports a 4.60 ERA , but has struggled in his previous two starts. He’d given up 12 runs in 9.2 IP. (more…)

Some iconography for our male, White Sox fan audience

You’ve probably seen his work in the Chicago Reader and other various alternative weeklies, but if not, here’s soemthing frokm Robert Ullman. Ullman is an accomplished illustrator and is something of a sports fan. I know he likes the Penguins (Boo!) and maybe has a thing for the White Sox. (more…)

White Sox first half report card

Two years ago, Taft came up with a system for using letter grades for first half team performance . I’m going to do the same thing here, both to honor him and—more importantly—because it’s a really good system. (more…)

This Time it Counted or What the Fuggla?

Man, that was an exciting marathon All Star game last night. The AL won in 15 innings, 4-3, but that is besides the point. The game was exciting from the get go, with some great pitching from starters Lee and Sheets, great pitching from the next pitchers, and well, great pitching throughout. Of course, sometimes great pitching is not enough and mistakes happen, and so we were treated to bonus ...

It’s the day of the All-Star Game. The last one at Yankee Stadium. The team owned by your newspaper has seven players in the game. Seven. You are a sports columnist. (more…)

The Matt Murton Era Officially Ends

It’s times exactly like this that I know I am going to miss Taft’s masterful blogging capabilities. On Monday the Brewers, who are roughly 4 or so games behind the Cubs, pulled off the trade of the year in acquiring last year’s AL Cy Young winner CC Sabathia for prospects. Then the Cubs pulled off the trade of the year , trading Matt Murton, Eric Patterson, Sean ...

Cubs catch Canadian and Cajun

I’ll let Shorr take this later today—Cub fan that he is—but I wanted to throw my two cents in about the Cub trade for Rich Harden and Louisiana native Chad Gaudin. (more…)

Pinella Reads Baseball Blog. Changes Lineup

I can only assume that Lou Pinella read yesterday’s blistering post questioning his decision to bat Daryle Ward fourth, because yesterday he moved Soto into the clean up spot and put Matt Murton in left field. (more…)

Why is Daryle Ward batting Fourth?

I watched most of last night’s game. I am not going to say that Daryle Ward cost the Cubs the game, as Matt Cain was really the reason the Cubs lost . Cain had pitched very well, allowing no runs on 2 hits through 8. One of those hits, however, was a triple hit by Ward that he stretched into a double. (more…)

Don’t look now, the Sox are on a winning streak (also, a rant)

Without a doubt, the White Sox sweep of the Cubs over last weekend was pretty awesome. Sox pitchers held Aramis Ramirez went 0-13, which is impressive, considering he torched the Sox in the first series. (more…)

White Sox Sweep. Umpires Receive Large Cash Deposits.

The White Sox swept the Cubs last night at the Joan, tying the season series at 3-3. Per Ross’ and my bet , in the case of a tie between the teams the bet would be determined by runs scored. So last night was made extra interesting, because when Thome came up to bat in the 8th I was still technically winning by one run. Stupid Jose Ascanio. And then stupid Jim Edmonds lining into a ...

Schlubway Series: Update

The White Sox have taken two in a row at The Joan from the Cubs. If my calculations are correct, for Ross to win the bet the Sox must win today by 4 runs. If the Cubs win or lose by 3 or less than I tie or win. This is when sports gets real interesting, when the point spread becomes a factor. I am not worried. I feel good about the Cubs chances today. That is not based on anything in ...

Yosh Kawano Day or “Why Do the Cubs hate Yosh Kawano”?
You may or may not know who Yosh Kawano is, and that is a shame. Yosh Kawano was the long time Cubs equipment manager, working for the team from 1943 to early 2008, when he was “retired” by the organization. Now, I say it is a shame that you may or may not know Yosh because Yosh is a Cub institution . He has a banner hanging in the concourse and the Cubs dugout is named after ...
